10 fun things to do this summer
The summer seems to have taken forever to arrive, but it’s almost here. Pack away your wellies and winter coats and fill your diary with fun and unique days out with your friends and family. The Wild Boar Chase Sunday 20th May
Get on your bike and join other riders to tackle the tracks and bridleways through the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. If you don’t fancy going the whole hog you can choose the shorter Small Bear option of just 20 miles. Or come out to support the riders taking part.
Chilli Fest Merthyr Saturday 23rd June
Are you crazy about chilli? This pop-up event is now in its fourth year and brings a splash of the best chilli producers from around the UK to Penderyn Square. Fill up on your favourite curries and cocktails, and perhaps take part in a chilli eating contest, with one ingredient taking centre stage!
Zip World Rocks Saturday 23rd June
Zip World Rocks is set against the impressive backdrop of the Penrhyn Quarry, where you can enjoy a day and evening of music and entertainment, as well as a 20km hike up Snowdonia where you can take in the views of the spectacular Devil’s Kitchen.
Coleford Grand Prix Sunday 24th June
The Coleford Grand Prix is a soapbox derby filled with adrenaline, where the entrants race their karts through Coleford’s town centre. There are prices for the fastest, most stylish, and most entertaining karts so join in and have fun!
Abergavenny Arts Festival Friday 29th June - Sunday 1st July
Everyone has heard of Abergavenny’s famous food festival, but what about the local arts scene? This festival brings together residents, community groups, schools and businesses to celebrate the talents of local artists.
The Monmouth Show Saturday 7th July
At over 200 years old, this event is definitely the oldest on our list, but it still continues to grow in size and offers a fun day out for the whole family. The show celebrates the local community, including trades, crafts and produce, all set in the stunning Wye Valley.
Coleford Music Festival Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th July
Described as “the Forest of Dean’s best kept secret” the Coleford Music Festival features local bands and national headliners along with children’s entertainment, street food and local produce. Join your local community for this two-day event.
Monmouth Festival Friday 27th July - Saturday 4th August
Now in its 36th year, the Monmouth Festival is a free nine-day celebration of a variety of musical acts, run and enjoyed by the local community. This year’s festival includes a Busking Festival, Family Fun Day, and Fringe.
Ross-on-Wye Carnival Saturday 4th August
A group of local volunteers, businesses and charities from Ross-on-Wye have put together a carnival on the first Saturday in August since 1977. The annual procession shows off floats, and offers entertainment and prizes for those who enter.
The Wye Valley Challenge Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th August
You can’t miss the dramatic landscape of the Wye Valley, but the Challenge invites you to take on this popular area of outstanding beauty by walking, jogging or running, starting in Chepstow, going through the picturesque countryside, past local historic sites, and alongside fast-flowing rivers.
