6 Memorable things to do this Christmas

‘Tis the season for magic and sparkle, so step away from the packed shops and stressful gift buying and enjoy a family Christmas filled with memories.  We have searched across our region to find our top seven things to do over the festive season.

Open Now – Skate Away

Take a dabble in one of the most popular winter sports, ice-skating.  It doesn’t matter if you’re not well-versed in the triple axel, or don’t have the nerves for the death spiral, staying upright is all most of us can manage.

One of the best places we have found to shimmy across the ice is Celtic Manor Resort, especially due to its beautiful setting in the resort’s Rooftop Garden.  Don’t worry if you get a winter chill, as there will be hot chocolate and cheeky bevvies to keep you warm.

Open Now – Christmas Fantasy

If there is one event that exudes the magic of Christmas it has to be this Christmas Spectacular at Clearwell Caves near Coleford.  You can follow the seasonal story of Cora and the Bloobious Bright as you walk through an array of exciting displays.  You will also get the chance to meet Father Christmas as well as maybe find a last minute gift or two at the Christmas market.

From 1 December – Perrygrove Railway

No matter what the time of year, a trip to Perrygrove Railway is bound fill the whole family with joy.  And this Christmas you can give them a unique experience as they sit round the fire of their cosy Carriage Shed Theatre and listen to a wonderful tale.  We have been told that you may even see a famous visitor arrive down the chimney laden down with gifts, now we wonder who that could be?

Sunday 2 December – Santa Run

No matter your ability, all the family can take part in what is set to be a Santa-filled event in Cyfarthfa Park, Merthyr Tydfil.  The Santa Fun Run is your chance to get in some festive fancy dress and walk, jog or run your way around the 2km course.

No costume?  That’s no excuse not to take part as free Santa suits will be provided for everyone over the age of 16, and there is a prize for the best costume for those under 16.

What’s more, just by taking part you will be helping to support the Stroke Association.

Christmas Morning – Freezing Treat

Before you fill your bellies with turkey and stuffing, before you have eaten more than your body weight in chocolate, head on down to Porthcawl to really get your day started with a shiver and a smile.

Yes, we’re talking about the annual Christmas morning swim.  We know it will be freezing but put on your best fancy dress costume, or even your warmest onesie, and go and have a paddle with all the other crazy people starting their Christmas in the sea.  What makes this event even more special is that by attending you will be helping raise money for Prostate Cymru.

Your presents will still be there when you get back, and you will have made a fantastic memory for the family to share for the rest of the year to come.

Make this Christmas one filled with memories that are everlasting.
