Abergavenny’s campaign for the homeless
It is estimated that 320,000 people in the UK are sleeping on the streets or currently in temporary accommodation. The new analysis finds that the number of Britons without a permanent place to live is one in 200 people. Figures from Shelter show that homelessness has increased in the last year by approximately 13,000.
Homelessness can happen swiftly; a sudden change of circumstances and a person’s world can turn upside down, leaving them in a situation they never imagined possible. Our Abergavenny branch is hoping that their campaign will help in a small way and are looking for donations.
Kate Carr from our Abergavenny branch says, “If it’s warm, comfortable and/or waterproof, we can make use of it. Duvets, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, bags/rucksacks are always in demand.”
Before you throw any of these items away, why not donate them to people who really need them?
Other items the team are hoping will be donated are: toiletries, including wash bags, soap, shower gel, shampoo, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, flannels, toothbrushes/paste, sanitary wear, deodorant and men’s shaving items.
Men’s and women’s clothing including underwear, coats, waterproofs, trousers tops, hoodies, fleeces, jumpers, shoes, boots, socks, scarves and gloves.
“We also provide food parcels, so rice, grains, cereals, porridge, crisps, chocolate, canned goods, cooking sauces etc. would also find a good home,” says Kate.
We would be grateful for any donation you are able to give; you can drop them off at the Roots Community Café in Gilwern, or the Bidmead Cook branch in Abergavenny.
Thank you all for any support you’re able to give.
