..Step inside.... St John's Church..

Built by coal merchant Sir John Josiah Guest in 1827 for his workers, St. John’s Church was used for Sunday services right up until 1997. In the 19th century, Dowlais Ironworks was one of the biggest producers of iron in the world.  It was Sir John’s grandfather that brought them to the area, when he came from Shropshire in 1767 to manage the ironworks. In 1807, Sir John took over as manager and his company became the world’s top producer of iron.

After 170 years the iconic Grade II listed church was left to nature’s guardianship - that is, until it was purchased to be converted into apartments. The developers have been sympathetic to the stunning original features of the property to ensure its character remains.  The lobby area has been recreated too, in a style in keeping with the chapel’s other features, notable amongst which are the floor tiles, the font, memorials, and even a number of church pews.

All the one and two-bedroom apartments will be available to rent, and we are proud to be working with the developer to find tenants. Many of the stained glass windows which dominated the Church have been restored for the new tenants to enjoy for many years to come.  Each apartment has been finished to a high standard and benefits from a parking space.

The apartments will be available to rent later this year, but if you would like to express your interest, contact our Merthyr Tydfil team for further details on 01685 388106.
